What is Adiponectin?

Adiponectin is a protein produced by adipose tissue cells. It takes part in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. It influences the control of appetite, has anti-inflammatory and anti-atherosclerotic effects.

Decreased serum adiponectin levels are observed in obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke and lipid metabolism disorders.

Increases in adiponectin levels have been noted in diseases with weight loss, including anorexia nervosa and renal failure, as well as in cardiovascular failure.

Adiponectin levels may decrease with age.

What does the test involve?

The test is performed from venous blood. Due to the lack of diurnal variation in adiponectin, it can be performed at any time of day. The test also does not need to be performed on an empty stomach.
