A paediatric nephrologist is a specialist who diagnoses, differentiates and treats the conditions and congenital defects of the urinary system and the kidneys in children and youth (individuals under the age of 18 years). Such problems include, amongst others: nephritis, nephropathies, urinary system infections, haematuria, and proteinuria.

When should an appointment with a paediatric nephrologist be made?

A paediatric nephrologist should be consulted in the following cases:

  • abnormal urine analysis results;
  • the presence of haematuria, erythrocyturia or proteinuria;
  • if the kidney area is swollen;
  • frequent, recurrent infections of the urinary tract;
  • problems with urination or complete urinary retention;
  • if congenital defects of the kidneys or other elements of the urinary system have been identified or suspected;
  • pain or swelling in the kidney area.
