Clinical significance
Allergic diseases are among one of the most common conditions of modern civilization. It is estimated that between 10-30% of the population suffers from allergies, depending on the form of the condition. Most of the allergic diseases are chronic and patients must be treated systematically, sometimes for life (this is the case with bronchial asthma). Allergy, or hypersensitivity, is the term used to describe an excessively heightened, tissue-damaging response of the immune system upon contact with a foreign antigen (allergen). Allergens bind to specific antibodies from the immunoglobulin E group. They can sensitize the body by inhalation, ingestion, by skóhand or parenterally. Immunological diagnosis of allergies uses determinations of total IgE (cIgE) and specific IgE (sIgE) concentrations, i.e. antibodies against specific allergens (sensitizing substances).
