- Test description
Apolypoprotein E (apo E) is a protein component of numerous
plasma lipoproteins (chylomicrons, VLDL, IDL, HDL) and is also present in the
in cerebrospinal fluid.
Apolipoprotein E plays an important role in the prevention of atherosclerosis
It transports lipids from the site of their formation or absorption to the
tissues, where they are stored or excreted from the body, and
Transports lipids, particularly cholesterol, from the organs of the
peripheral organs to the liver for excretion.
The main site of apo E synthesis is liver cells. It is also
synthesized in peripheral cells (macrophages, astrocytes) and in the
lungs, kidneys, spleen, muscles.
One variant of the apo E gene increases the risk of the disease
Alzheimer's disease.
