Bacterial Vaginosis (Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, Lactobacillus spp., Bacteroides fragilis, Megasphaera type 1, Bacterial vaginosis-associated bacteria 2, Mobiluncus spp.)
Purpose of the test: Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a quantitative disruption of the vaginal bacterial flora. In BV, there is a reduction or complete loss of Lactobacillus populations, leading to the uncontrolled growth of strict anaerobic bacteria.
The test aims to assess the overall state of the vaginal bacterial flora and detect any potential imbalances.
Although bacterial vaginosis primarily affects women, men can carry the microorganisms that cause it. Therefore, the test is recommended for both women and men.
Microorganisms detected in the test:
- Gardnerella vaginalis
- Atopobium vaginae
- Lactobacillus spp.
- Bacteroides fragilis
- Megasphaera type 1
- Bacterial vaginosis-associated bacteria 2
- Mobiluncus spp.
Gardnerella vaginalis is one of the most common etiological agents of bacterial vaginosis and is an indicator microorganism for this condition, found in nearly all women with BV. Similarly, Atopobium vaginae is another significant anaerobe associated with BV.
Bacteroides fragilis, Megasphaera type 1, and Bacterial vaginosis-associated bacteria 2 are also considered diagnostic markers for BV.
Mobiluncus spp. is found exclusively in women with BV, but only in 50% of cases and is never present in a healthy vaginal flora.
When to perform the test? The test is indicated for individuals experiencing concerning symptoms such as:
- Watery or frothy vaginal discharge with a milky or gray color and a strong "fishy" odor.
- Irritation of the vaginal mucosa.
- Itching of the vulva and vagina.
- Burning sensation during urination.
Test method: Real-Time PCR, which is more accurate and definitive compared to immunological tests.
Sample material:
- For women: Vaginal swab, liquid cytology.
- For men: Penile swab, semen.
Turnaround time for test results: Up to 5 business days.
