Benzodiazepine in urine

Benzodiazepines are the most commonly used drugs sedative and sleep-inducing drugs.

They are relatively safe and have a broad therapeutic index. They have high addictive potential, with chronic use developing a tolerance develops. Benzodiazepines are well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract gastrointestinal tract, penetrate the blood-brain barrier.
They are metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine. In poisoning there is a depression of the central nervous system, cardiovascular system and respiration. Poisoning with benzodiazepines is treated symptomatically.
The results of determinations of this group of drugs are mainly used to confirm the the cause of the poisoning.
Qualitative determination of benzodiazpines in urine are group determinations, not allowing identification of the drug.

The time in which we can detect benzodiazepines in urine depends on which drug in this group was taken and is:

• 3 days for short-acting benzodiazepines
• and as long as 30 days for long-acting ones
