- Test description
Determination of the S 100 protein is important in detecting or monitoring of malignant melanoma. S 100 protein belongs to the proteins calcium-binding proteins. It is involved in the processes of cell division and differentiation of cells and in inflammatory reactions, it is also attributed with certain neurotropic properties, as well as a connection with the secretory function of the of the pituitary gland. The protein is composed of α and β. In histochemical studies, S 100 proteins are detected in 100% of neuroblastoma and neurofibroma cells, in 50% of malignant tumors of the peripheral nerve sheaths and in other tumor cells. Both isoforms are a sensitive indicator of brain damage against a background of hypoxia and ischemia, hence, in a precise manner, on the based on the evaluation of changes in the concentration of this protein over time, one can predict the course of ischemic strokes in the brain.
