P/Saccharomyces cerevisiae IgM antibodies
Clinical significance
Assaying antibodies to Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast (ASCA) is used in the róationalization of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Both disease entities belong to the group of inflammatory bowel disease and are difficult to ródifferentiate, as they have similar symptoms. The use of ASCA and ANCA (perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodiesów) antibody assays allows non-invasive diagnosis of both conditions. The detection of ASCA antibodies not only in the IgG and IgA classes, but also in IgM, indicates the activation of the immune system by antigens present in the cell wall of baker's yeast.
