Catheter replacement/removal - what should you know?
A urological catheter is a thin tube that is inserted into the bladder through the urethra to allow urine to drain from the bladder for more efficient drainage and collection. The catheter can be made of a variety of plastics, such as silicone, polyurethane or latex. Catheterization is used for certain conditions when urination is difficult. When the catheter is no longer needed or the need for replacement arises for various reasons, it should be removed as soon as possible.
What does the procedure look like?
It is a short procedure, which usually takes about 10-15 minutes. Before the procedure, it is recommended to empty the bladder. Then a urethral anesthetic is administered and a cystoscope is inserted. The doctor, using a special tool, then grasps the catheter and removes it from the urinary tract through the urethra.
