Sinus CT scan - what does it involve?
You must have a paper referral from your doctor in order to benefit from the examination.
Computed tomography of the sinuses is one of the imaging examinations that allow a precise assessment of selected structures. CT scanning uses the properties of X-rays, which are emitted by a specialised device called a tomograph. It allows a three-dimensional image of the structure under examination to be obtained.
CBCT is a variation of traditional computed tomography (CT), and is more accurate in diagnosing conditions in the craniofacial area, the digital technologies used during the examination allow a very precise, three-dimensional image to be obtained of the patient's tissues and organs.Additionally, it is safer for the patient. Safety is primarily related to the lower exposure to X-rays than during traditional tomography. The amount of radiation absorbed by the body is truly minimal. The main difference between the two methods lies in the volume of the object imaged at one time. In traditional CT, only a narrow section of the patient's body is imaged using a 'fan' beam of x-rays. In order to image a wide range of anatomical structures with CT, it is necessary to scan the patient repeatedly with a rotating fan of x-rays. In CBCT, on the other hand, a large-area detector captures a wide area of the patient's anatomical structures during a single rotation.
CBCT tomography - what does the examination show?
It reveals all the structures in the vicinity of the sinuses. It allows the detection of tumours, lesions such as abscesses or cysts and other abnormalities such as acute and chronic inflammation. Although the image of the sinuses can be seen on the monitor directly during the examination, the result is not immediately available. During a CT scan, the image is saved on a medium, e.g. a CD/DVD, and is then assessed by a specialist. A recording of the examination and a description are given to the patient.
When to have a sinus CT scan?
- when fluid is suspected in the sinuses,
- the patient has suffered a craniofacial trauma and a sinus injury is suspected
- the child has a malformation and an evaluation of its severity is necessary,
- the patient is suspected of developing cancer in the sinuses or nasal cavity,
- the patient is diagnosed with a curvature of the nasal septum,
- the presence of an abscess or cyst is suspected,
- it is necessary to assess the patency of the nasal passages,
- normal sinus airflow must be assessed,
- it is necessary to assess the effectiveness of the applied treatmezenia.
