Coagulation factor V
Clinical significance
Factor V (proaccelerin) is one of the plasma coagulation factors. In the process of blood clotting, factor V is activated. Activated factor V accelerates the conversion reaction of prothrombin (factor II) into active thrombin (factor IIa). This determines the formation of włóknik (fibrin), whichóforms the clot stroma. The presence of factor V is genetically determined, and a mutation in the gene encoding this factor is one of the main congenital causes of increased risk of thromboembolic lesions in the body (the so-called Leiden mutation).
