Fibroblast growth factorów 23 FGF23
Clinical significance
Fibroblast growth factorów (FGF23) is produced mainlyów by osteocytes and osteoblasts, and the target organ is the kidney. FGF23 is a hormone thatós known to lower the plasma concentration of phosphateów, reducing its resorption back into the proximal tubule and inhibiting absorption in the intestines. Excess fibroblasów growth factor 23 increases urinary excretion of phosphateów and lowers its concentration in plasma. In addition, it inhibits the synthesis of 1,25(OH)2D and parathormone. FGF23 deficiency, on the other hand, leads to increased phosphateós concentration in the circulation, elevated 1,25(OH)2D concentration and an increased tendency to form calcification in soft tissues. Determination of FGF23 levels is helpful in monitoring therapy in patientsów with renal disease at róstages of disease and in dialysis patients.
