Psychological diagnosis - who performs it?

Psychological diagnosis is carried out by a qualified diagnostic psychologist. Its purpose is to confirm or exclude the presence of a specific mental health disorder in the patient. For this purpose, the specialist uses an in-depth interview and specific diagnostic tools.

IMPORTANT: Before using psychological diagnosis, you must schedule a psychological consultation in advance with the specialist with whom you plan to use the diagnosis. Taking advantage of the diagnosis without prior consultation with a specialist is unfortunately not possible.

Psychological diagnosis of adults

When to perform a psychological diagnosis?

Patients who suspect they have a mental disorder should go to a diagnostic psychologist, but not only: we welcome all people who feel they need help, but do not know what is wrong with them.

What is diagnosed? By what methods?

The psychological diagnosis of adults includes tests to confirm or exclude:

  • depression;
  • anxiety disorders;
  • addictions;
  • affective disorders (including bipolar disorder);
  • schizophrenia;
  • personality disorders.

Many types of tests are used. Specialists use STAI/STAIC (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) questionnaires, the O-Z or EPQ-R personality test, and the MSEI multidimensional self-report questionnaire, among others.

Psychological diagnosis of children

When to perform a psychological diagnosis?

Parents with children who are suspected of having behavioral disorders, personality disorders or any other problems that affect functioning at home and school should come in for a psychological diagnosis. Often the need for a psychological diagnosis is noticed by the school psychologist, who informs the parents. A visit to a diagnostic psychologist makes it possible to detect mental health disorders in a child and initiate therapy or drug treatment.

What is diagnosed? By what methods?

In children, the level of cognitive functions (intellect) and perceptual-motor functions are determined. There is also a test of the child's personality, specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dysorthography, dyscalculia - as well as disorders of the dyslexic type and those resulting from abnormal study habits). The diagnosis also assesses the risk of specific learning difficulties in preschool children, emotional, neurotic, adaptive and other disorders.

Our specialists use generally known psychological tests, such as the ASRS (questionnaires to diagnose autism spectrum disorder), Conners-3 (to diagnose ADHD) and the Structured Clinical Interview for Personality Disorders according to DSM-5.

To support the functioning of the whole family, we also examine the Parental Attitudes Scale using the SPR and SPR-2 questionnaire.

How does the visit go?

Children come to the visit together with their parents. The meeting takes place in a non-stressful, friendly atmosphere for young patients.
