Clinical significance

Eosinophils in nasal swab - evaluation of the presence of eosinophils in a nasal swab taken to confirm or exclude the allergic nature of rhinitis. Eosinophils are formed in the bone marrow, circulate in the peripheral blood and then enter tissues and organsów. Cytokines such as GM-CSF, IL-2 and the most important IL-5, which enhances their function and inhibits apoptosis, are involved in the proliferation, róation and maturation of eosinophils. Physiologically, in healthy individuals, eosinophils are not found in the nasal mucosa. Their appearance is characteristic of allergic rhinitis, especiallyólly caused by grass allergy, besides, their presence in nasal swab is found in eosinophilic polyps and non-allergic eosinophilic rhinitis.
