Influenza is a highly contagious disease associated with the risk of serious complications. It usually resolves on its own within seven days, but due to its nonspecific symptoms, it is often mistaken for the common cold and underestimated. Unfortunately, if left untreated, it can lead to severe complications such as influenza pneumonia, meningitis, or even death.
The flu virus is transmitted through droplets, and the only way to prevent the severe course of the disease is to receive a flu vaccination—especially before the peak infection season, which lasts from autumn to late spring.
Since the flu virus mutates rapidly, specialists recommend annual flu vaccinations. Each new vaccine is continuously improved to account for new virus mutations. After vaccination, antibodies develop within 2-3 weeks, and immunity lasts from 6 to even 12 months.
Who Should Get a Flu Vaccine?
Flu vaccination is recommended for all adults who want to protect themselves from a severe course of the disease, especially:
- individuals with weakened immune systems;
- people with chronic conditions (especially respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, liver or kidney diseases, or diabetes);
- pregnant women and those planning pregnancy (the flu vaccine is safe for both the mother and the baby);
- senior citizens.
