Gastrin
Clinical significance
Gastrin belongs to the gastrointestinal hormones. It is produced by endocrine G cells of the gastric mucosa and in the early small intestine. Gastrin is a major stimulator of hydrochloric acid secretion and pepsinogen, a substance thatóra initiates protein digestion in the stomach. It stimulates the secretion of water and ionsów into the pancreatic juice, as well as the secretion of bile, whichós necessary for the proper digestion of fatsów. The main task of this hormone is to regulate the secretion of hydrochloric acid and influence the normal state of the gastric mucosa. Determination of gastrin levels is helpful in the diagnosis of gastrinoma and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The test is also performed in suspected G-cell hyperplasia and peptic ulcer, in chronic atrophic gastritis, after intestinal resection, in therapy with preparations that inhibit the secretion of digestive juice.
