Gonorrhea, a disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted infections worldwide.

In women, symptoms—if present—are often nonspecific. They include painful urination, lower abdominal pain, abnormal vaginal discharge, intermenstrual bleeding, or rectal bleeding.

In men, the most characteristic symptom, appearing 2-5 days after infection, is purulent discharge from the urethra accompanied by dysuria. Other possible symptoms include testicular swelling and pain, as well as rectal bleeding. Gonorrhea infection increases the risk of contracting HIV up to tenfold.

Trichomoniasis

Men are usually asymptomatic carriers. Occasionally, they may experience symptoms related to the urogenital system, such as urethritis.

In women, trichomoniasis can cause vaginitis, which is accompanied by watery, foul-smelling, greenish-yellow discharge, itching, burning, and painful urination.

In the case of Trichomonas vaginalis infection, proper diagnosis and treatment of the male partner are crucial, as men often remain asymptomatic carriers of the parasite.

Comparison of PCR and Microscopic Examination Methods

The sensitivity of microscopic examination of discharge in men allows for diagnosis in only about 30% of cases. Urethral discharge culture or testing the first portion of urine enables diagnosis in 60-80% of cases. Performing both tests simultaneously increases diagnostic accuracy.

PCR-based genetic tests are highly sensitive, both at the beginning and the end of the infection, even when the pathogen's concentration in the sample is relatively low.
