- About the Product
The Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) IgM test detects a recent infection with the varicella or shingles virus.
When to Perform the Test
The test is useful in diagnosing primary VZV infection as well as reactivation of the infection (although IgM antibodies disappear more quickly in reactivation cases). It can also be performed to confirm an ongoing infection (IgM may appear later than IgG).
Medical Conditions
Chickenpox and shingles.
Symptoms
In children, symptoms may include rash. In adults, symptoms may include pneumonia, meningitis, encephalitis, myocarditis, secondary bacterial complications (staphylococcal and streptococcal infections), severe irritation and skin changes in the affected nerve area, as well as intense pain and itching at the site of nerve involvement.
