General stool examination

General stool examination is the primary test performed to determine the cause of gastrointestinal diseases.

The examination consists of macroscopic evaluation (consistency, color, odor), microscopic (mucus, pus, undigested food debris - fat globules, starch grains, muscle fibers, plant cells and others), chemical composition. In microscopic preparations, one looks for parasites or their eggs, undigested food residues (e.g starch grains, meat fibers, connective tissue fibers). W biochemical studies, the amount of fat, carbohydrates is determined, pH.
