Clarithromycin belongs to the new generation of macrolide antibiotics generation. It is used to combat a range of infections caused by by streptococci, staphylococci, chlamydia and mycoplasmas, among others The mechanism of action involves inhibition of protein biosynthesis in bacterial cells by binding to the subunit of the 50S ribosomal subunit and disrupting protein synthesis. The determination of the concentration of Clarithromycin is performed to determine the appropriate dosage and when poisoning is suspected.
