Cortisol in saliva
Clinical significance
Cortisol is called the stress hormone because there is an increase in its concentration in response to stress. Cortisol production occurs in the adrenal glands. Synthesis and secretion is dependent on adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The main function of cortisol is to increase blood glucose levels, in addition, it affects the body's water, electrolyte and protein metabolism. Cortisol secretion is related to the diurnal cycle. The highest concentration occurs in the morning hours, and the lowest at pólnight. In the diagnosis of cortisol secretion disorders, cortisol levels are determined in blood próbs taken every few hours around the clock. Saliva taken with a special kit can also be used for this purpose. This is less stressful and aggravating for the patient.
