Qualification for the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD)

The intrauterine device (IUD), which releases the hormone levonorgestrel, is a highly effective and long-lasting method of contraception.

During the patient’s qualification visit for the IUD insertion, a gynaecologist determines whether there are any contraindications to this contraceptive method and selects a suitable IUD model.

As part of the consultation, the doctor, in order to rule out any contraindications to the IUD insertion:

  • takes a medical history;
  • performs a thorough gynaecological examination;
  • collects material for cytology (unless the patient has a cytology result obtained within no more than one year before the visit); if necessary, the doctor also takes a cervical swab (services charged additionally);
  • performs gynaecological ultrasound at additional charge (unless the patient brings a result of ultrasound conducted within no more than one year before the visit);
  • may order other tests and examinations – depending on the situation.

  • Once the contraindications have been ruled out, another appointment is scheduled, during which the qualifying doctor will insert the IUD. If the results of the ordered tests and examinations are abnormal, the patient should not make an appointment for the IUD insertion until such abnormalities have been treated.

  • The price of the qualification visit does not include the cost of the IUD and the insertion procedure.

  • The cost of the selected IUD is borne by the patient. IUDs are available for purchase at Medicover.
