Clinical significance
Beta-hydroxybutyric acid belongs, along with acetoacetic acid, to the main ketone compounds of the oganism released in the liver. Physiologically, there is a small amount of ketone bodies in serum and urine. An increase in their quantity occurs when the availability of insulin is reduced, caused by a change in lipidów metabolism and the process of oxidation of glucose to lipidsów. Ketoacidosis can occur in diabetes, alcoholism, starvation. Initial symptoms include polyuria, vomiting, abdominal pain. In the póeriod, lethargy and ketoacidosis coma may occur.
