- Test description
Mycophenolic acid is an active metabolite of mycophenolate, a drug An imunosuppressant administered primarily to patients after transplants (heart, kidney, liver) as a means of preventing transplant rejection. The drug is also sometimes given to patients suffering from autoimmune diseases. Mycophenolic acid inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase, which is involved in the synthesis of guanosine nucleosides necessary for the construction of DNA. The patient is usually given a standard dose of the drug; dose changes should be monitored depending on clinical effects. Too low a concentration can lead to graft rejection, too high can have a toxic effects.
