Vanillin-migdalic acid VMA
Clinical significance
Vanillin-migdalic acid (VMA) - along with homovanillic acid - is a major metabolite of norepinephrine and epinephrine. It is found in the urine of healthy people in trace amounts. Patients with pheochromocytoma or neuroblastoma show increased urinary excretion of epinephrine, norepinephrine and their metabolitesów i.e. VMA. Increased urinary excretion can also occur in coma, dehydration or extreme stress situations. Pheochromocytomas clinically manifest as hypertension, often of a paroxysmal nature. In addition, symptoms such as tachycardia, increased sweating, ból headaches, coronary bóle, visual disturbances and sensory disturbances may occur.
Patient Preparation
The test, performed in a daily urine collectionóurine, requires acidification with 6M HCL. Prior to the test, a diet devoid of productsów containing bananas, vanilla, chocolate, pastries, as well as coffee, strong tea, avocados, prunes, pineapplesów should be followed for 3-4 days.
