Clinical significance:
Leptin, an adipose tissue hormone, inhibits the secretion of neuropeptide Y in the hypothalamusrz, whichry a potent appetite stimulator. Elevated serum leptin levels in obese peopleare caused by abnormal leptin receptor function.
As we age, leptin concentrations may decrease, resulting in increased appetite and consequent obesity. Leptin deficiency also promotes decreased tissue sensitivity to insulin.
Leptin determination is useful in evaluating menstrual disorders and obesity-related infertility, in diagnosing obese children and adults with symptoms of chronic hunger.
