Liquid cytology is otherwise known as thin-layer or monolayer cytology. It is also referred to as LBC, which stands for liquid-based cytology. This examination is based on a modern technique of preparing a cytological specimen. The Polish Gynaecological Society recommends liquid-based cytology as a screening method for cervical cancer - it can detect early premalignant and neoplastic lesions. Compared to classical liquid cytology, liquid cytology provides a higher detection rate of high-grade intraepithelial dysplastic lesions (HSIL).
