Multiple pregnancy ultrasound
During an ultrasound scan of multiple pregnancy, the number of foetuses, their position and anatomical structure are assessed.

- Documents
Multiple pregnancies require more frequent ultrasound examinations because they have a higher risk of complications than single pregnancies. The diagnosis of the type of pregnancy is made during an ultrasound scan performed in the first trimester.
The ultrasound examination of multiple pregnancies allows assessment of:
- the number of foetuses and their position,
- cardiac function and foetal anatomy,
- structure and position of the placenta,
- volume of amniotic fluid.
In addition, an ultrasound scan in pregnancy makes it possible to assess the risk of genetic syndromes, heart defects and other severe birth defects.
In the case of a twin pregnancy between the 11th and 14th week of pregnancy, an ultrasound may be performed together with the PAPP-A test – this is a test performed on a woman’s blood sample to determine the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the foetus (e.g. Down syndrome).
