Why is it worth doing a blood test package for pregnant women at home?
Among the basic tests are those that assess a woman's general condition (complete blood count, urinalysis), as well as more specific tests. The glucose test helps detect gestational diabetes, which, if untreated, can lead to fetal macrosomia or contribute to conditions like heart defects in the baby. Without tests, it's easy to overlook, as symptoms can be mistaken for pregnancy effects on the mother's body. Similarly, pregnancy-related anemia is detected through blood count and iron level measurements – an element that the mother’s body needs in large amounts. Undiagnosed anemia results in the fetus not receiving enough nutrients for proper growth, which can lead to miscarriage, premature birth, or, in extreme cases, fetal death. Among the basic pregnancy blood tests is also TSH, an indicator of thyroid function. When thyroid hormones are too low (high TSH), the fetus's neuropsychological development is delayed, and when too high (low TSH), there’s a risk of miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, or life-threatening conditions for the mother.
The package also includes tests that are not part of the mandatory tests for pregnant women but are still worth considering. These include iron and ferritin tests, which assess the risk of iron deficiency anemia. Iron is especially important for the fetus because it helps transport oxygen, which is essential for proper cell division and the development of the baby's organs.
Scheduling home blood collection is an excellent option for expectant mothers: it saves time that can be spent planning the baby's room and getting used to the new role, and energy – after all, a growing belly can sometimes make standing in long lines difficult. Swap the waiting room for your home! An experienced medical professional will collect your blood at a convenient time.
How often should blood tests be performed during pregnancy?
According to the Ministry of Health's recommendations, basic blood and urine tests should be performed five times during pregnancy. This way, the expectant mother ensures proper fetal development and the baby’s health after birth.
How to prepare for blood tests during pregnancy?
- Plan the blood draw for the morning, preferably between 7 and 10 AM.
- Take the test on an empty stomach – eat your last meal 12 hours before the blood draw.
- Avoid intense physical activity and stress before the tests. Rest for 30 minutes before the test.
- Do not change your daily diet just before the test. Follow a light diet the day before the test.
- Stay hydrated. Drink a glass of water 30 minutes before the test.
- Consult your doctor about the medications you are taking and find out if you need to change how you take them before the test.
Full list of tests in the package:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) A basic blood test that assesses the overall condition of the body and detects anemia.
- Glucose Blood sugar level, which helps identify gestational diabetes.
- Iron A basic element whose deficiency contributes to anemia. It is essential for proper fetal development and is a major building block of the placenta.
- Ferritin Serves as the body’s iron store, and its level reflects iron reserves.
- Lipid Profile Cholesterol levels often increase during pregnancy due to the increased need for energy and nutrients. A lipid profile helps monitor cholesterol levels in pregnant women and, if necessary, implement dietary and lifestyle changes to maintain healthy lipid levels.
- Liver Function Tests The liver plays a key role in metabolism, bile production, detoxification, and nutrient storage. During pregnancy, when the mother's body must provide the necessary nutrients for the fetus, proper liver function is particularly important. Liver function tests help assess the presence of liver inflammation, such as viral or toxic hepatitis. Early detection of these conditions allows doctors to manage them appropriately and minimize potential risks to the mother and child.
- Vitamin D Plays a key role in fetal development, especially in bone development. Adequate vitamin D levels are necessary for proper calcium and phosphorus absorption, which are essential for building strong bones and teeth in the developing baby. Vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk of congenital bone defects in the newborn. It also plays an important role in maternal health, affecting the immune system, muscle function, heart health, and hormone regulation. Adequate vitamin D levels can help maintain a healthy immune system and reduce the risk of some chronic diseases in the mother.
- TSH Controls thyroid hormone production and helps monitor underactive or overactive thyroid function. Hypothyroidism during pregnancy can lead to complications such as premature birth, low birth weight, neurological problems in the child, and increased risk of maternal hypertension.
- Blood Group Knowing the mother's blood group helps anticipate the risk of blood group incompatibility between mother and fetus. This is especially important in Rh-negative blood types when the mother is Rh- and the father or fetus may be Rh+ (Rh-positive). This can lead to a serological conflict, potentially causing health complications for both the mother and fetus. In such cases, the doctor may take appropriate measures, such as prophylactic administration of anti-Rh immunoglobulin (Anti-D) to minimize the risk of complications.
