Clinical significance
PAPPA-A ( pregnancy protein A) determination is, in addition to ß-hCG free subunit determination, a recommended biochemical test for pregnant women by the Polish Gynecological Society and FMF (Fetal Medicine Foundation of London), performed between 11 and 13 weeks of pregnancy. The PAPP-A test (determination of PAPPA-A and the free subunit of ß-HCH) addresses three chromosomal aberrations: Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome. The interpretation also takes into account the woman's age and the ultrasound result - nuchal translucency assessment, a test also performed rów between the 11th and 13th weeks of pregnancy. Pregnancy protein A is a glycoprotein, a metalloproteinase secreted by the syncytiotrophoblast. The concentration of PAPPA-A in a pregnant woman's blood increases from the 6th week of pregnancy until delivery. The protein can also be produced by fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells and osteoblasts. The main action of PAPPA-A is immunosuppression, regulating the delivery of nutrients to the fetus.
