Clinical significance
Allergic diseases are among one of the most common conditions of modern civilization. It is estimated that between 10-30% of the population suffers from allergies, depending on the form of the condition. Most of the allergic diseases are chronic and patients must be treated systematically, sometimes for life (this is the case with bronchial asthma). Allergy, or hypersensitivity, is the term used to describe an excessively heightened, tissue-damaging response of the immune system upon contact with a foreign antigen (allergen). Allergens bind to specific antibodies from the immunoglobulin E group. They can sensitize the body by inhalation, ingestion, by skóhand or parenterally. Immunological diagnosis of allergies uses determinations of total IgE (cIgE) and specific IgE (sIgE) concentrations, i.e. antibodies against specific allergens (sensitizing substances). They are an alternative to skór tests (they exclude false-negative results in people with extensive skór tests or in patients with skór hyperresponsiveness). They are safe and can be performed on any person of any age, including children or the elderly and even patientsów requiring continuous administration of anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory drugs (these drugs do not affect the results of sIg determinations).
