Protein S activity
A blood test in which the activity of glycoprotein - the free fraction of protein S - is measured. The test is helpful in diagnosing coagulation disorders, venous thromboembolism, and in investigating the causes of deep vein thrombosis.

- Test description
During the test, the activity of glycoprotein - the free fraction of protein S synthesized in the liver with the help of vitamin K - is measured. This protein forms a complex with protein C on the cell surface, increasing the affinity of active protein C to phospholipid surfaces and inhibiting the activation of factor X in the intrinsic coagulation pathway by specifically binding with active factor VIIIa.
When to Perform the Test?
This test is conducted for patients in the diagnosis of coagulation disorders, venous thromboembolism, or in investigating the causes of deep vein thrombosis. It is also useful in the diagnosis of strokes.
Associated Conditions
The activity of protein S is measured for diagnosing conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, and pulmonary embolism.
Symptoms
Protein S activity is measured upon observing symptoms such as low free protein S activity, which suggests thrombosis, embolism, cerebrovascular incidents, and miscarriages.
