Clinical significance
Borrelia burgdorferi - a spirochete transmitted by ticks mainly of the species Ixodes ricinus and causing an inflammatory disease called Lyme disease, Lyme disease or tick-borne spirochete. The main habitat of ticks are rodents and wildlife. Infection occurs at the site of the tick bite, from where the spirochetes can spread by lymphatic and blood routes. The disease can produce a range of symptomsów: erythema migrans, pseudomembranous symptoms, neurological disorders and myocarditis, and others. Diagnosis is based on the diagnosis on the basis of symptomsów, serological tests and detection of the presence of DNA of spirochetesów in the examined material. IgM antibodies appear 3-4 weeks after infection, IgG class antibodies appear in 4-6 weeks. About a month after infection, antibodies of both classes should be detected in the serum.
