Clinical significance
Antibodies against double-stranded DNA (anti - dsDNA-NcX) belong to antinuclear antibodies (ANA). ANAs are found in most systemic connective tissue diseases, and have the highest sensitivity in the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Anti-dsDNA antibodies are considered a specific marker of systemic lupus erythematosus, especially the severe form of the disease, which runs with kidney involvement. These antibodies are present in 40-90% of SLE patients. Thus, they are one of the most important criteria for the diagnosis of SLE, and their titers correlate with the activity of the disease process and can be used to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment used. They also often increase during or just before a period of symptom exacerbationów. A low level of anti-dsDNA is considered negative, but it does not exclude the diagnosis of SLE.
