Antibodies Against HSV Virus IgG – Study Description
The herpes test is an immunoenzymatic test. It allows the detection of IgG antibodies directed against the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which may indicate a past infection. The test is helpful in diagnosing both virus types: HSV-1 (responsible for infections primarily around the face) and HSV-2 (causing genital herpes). HSV infection can be primary or recurrent, symptomatic or asymptomatic. IgG antibodies appear a few to several weeks after the primary infection and persist for a lifetime.
The herpes virus test is significant because HSV causes various conditions. Even in mild forms, they can be troublesome, such as cold sores on the lips or around the eyes, causing unsightly fluid-filled blisters on the skin. In some cases, HSV can lead to severe complications, including encephalitis. It’s important to note that after infection, the virus remains in the body and can cause periodic recurrences.
When Should You Take a Herpes Test? Indications
You should consider an HSV IgG test whenever characteristic blisters appear on the lips, around the eyes, or on the genitals. This may be accompanied by general discomfort.
It is essential to see a doctor and get an HSV test if symptoms appear that might indicate herpetic encephalitis or meningitis. These symptoms include:
- high fever;
- headaches;
- drowsiness;
- neck stiffness;
- sensitivity to light;
- altered consciousness.
Testing for the herpes virus is particularly crucial for newborns. In their case, a positive HSV IgG result may be associated not only with skin rash but also with seizures, vision damage, or sepsis.
HSV Test - Preparation for the Examination
To properly interpret HSV IgG antibody test results, you need to follow certain rules.
- Avoid consuming heavy, fatty meals and alcohol on the day before the test.
- Arrive for the test on an empty stomach. The last meal should be consumed 8–12 hours prior to the test. Consult your doctor about whether to take medications on the day of the test.
- You may drink a small amount of water just before the test. Rest for at least 15 minutes before the sample is collected.
- Inform the staff about any medications, supplements, or herbal preparations you are taking.
Herpes Virus – Examination Procedure
To determine the levels of HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies, the test should be conducted in the morning. A blood sample is taken from the elbow vein, and in cases of suspected encephalitis or meningitis, from cerebrospinal fluid.
HSV IgG Test – Interpretation of Results
The herpes test can yield one of two results – the presence or absence of HSV-1/2 antibodies in the IgG class. The result may be false if the test is conducted during the so-called serological window, the period between exposure to the virus and the beginning of antibody production. This period lasts about four weeks post-infection. For pregnant women, it is crucial to exclude the presence of IgM antibodies, which may indicate an acute infection.
HSV Test – Price
The cost of the test usually ranges from 75 to 120 PLN. The price depends on the location and facility where the sample is collected.
