If the complete blood count (CBC) result is abnormal, a blood smear test is performed to further investigate potential conditions such as:

• anemia,
• developmental disorders of red blood cells,
• polycythemia vera,
• erythroleukemia.

Microscopic evaluation of the blood smear allows for preliminary diagnosis of:

• leukemia,
• immune deficiencies,
• infections, parasitic diseases,
• and other conditions.

The test must be purchased together with a complete blood count (CBC).
