Serotonin in urine
The determination of daily serotonin excretion is important in the diagnosis of intestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms - carcinoma. The test, performed in a daily urine collection, allows the assessment of daily production of the hormone and reduces fluctuations in serotonin concentrations that depend on the diurnal rhythm making the interpretation of the results of determinations performed in blood difficult.

- Test description
What is serotonin?
Serotonin is an important hormone and conductor of nerve impulses. It has a multidirectional effect: it regulates the contractile function of the gastrointestinal tract and blood vessels, affects platelet aggregation, the process of falling asleep, sexual desire, as well as appetite and mood. Serotonin deficiency is associated with depressive disorders, increased appetite, insomnia and irritability. Excess causes elevated blood pressure, accelerated blood pulse, convulsions, chills, diarrhea and vomiting. Taking various drugs that affect serotonin levels can cause a drug-induced syndrome caused by excess serotonin, known as serotonin syndrome.
An elevated serotonin level is also found in the neuroendocrine tumor of the intestines - carcinoma.
A determination of the metabolite which is a breakdown product of serotonin secreted by carcinoid cells is performed in the material from the daily urine collection.
Serotonin versus carcinoma
Serotonin is secreted not only in the central nervous system, but also to a large extent in the small intestine. In addition, it can be produced by intestinal cancer - serotonin-producing carcinoma In that case, an important study is to determine the daily excretion of serotonin.
What does the test consist of?
This determination is performed from the daily collection of urine, so that the effect of fluctuations in the concentration of this hormone during the day is eliminated.

How to prepare for the test?
Before proceeding with daily urine collection, you should
- buy a special 2-3 liter container at the pharmacy. It contains a scale that allows you to accurately read the volume of the material.
- get a disposable container with a cap, such as for a general urine test. In it, after the collection is completed, bring the sample to the laboratory. The containers do not need to be sterile.
- take an ampoule of 6 M HCl Acid from the collection point - follow the enclosed instructions closely
- at the end of the collection, mix the urine and pour it into a smaller container to about half its height
- record the total volume of urine collected on the small container or on the order
Waiting time for the result: up to 14 working days
