What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common compression neuropathies. Its cause is chronic compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel.
The development of carpal tunnel syndrome is favored by performing monotonous movements, so people who use a computer, perform manual labor or play keyboard instruments for many hours a day are especially prone to the problem.
Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are mainly tingling and numbness in the knuckle and finger area, which can worsen at night. Other symptoms include pain in the wrist, sensory disturbances and weakness in the muscles of the knuckle. The symptoms are bothersome and often make it difficult to perform precise tasks, such as buttoning a shirt.
Physiotherapy in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome
Physiotherapy is an important part of conservative treatment, recommended in the early stages of the disease and in cases where there are no indications for surgery. Therapy uses:
- physical treatments (e.g. shock wave, ultrasound, laser),
- functional massage,
- kinesiotaping.
The methods used relieve pain and improve daily functioning.
