Test for Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum
Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum are pathogens responsible for a variety of persistent urinary tract infections. If left untreated, they can lead to inflammatory conditions, infertility, premature births, and even miscarriages. To prevent these severe consequences, it is crucial to respond promptly to any concerning symptoms. The first step is to perform a test for the presence of Ureaplasma, both parvum and urealyticum. Identifying the specific pathogen causing the symptoms allows for effective treatment.
Purpose of the Test:
- Detect the presence of Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum DNA in the tested material.
- Diagnose sexually transmitted infections, allowing for the identification of potential co-infections and the selection of appropriate therapy.
Microorganisms Detected in the Test:
- Ureaplasma parvum
- Ureaplasma urealyticum
Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum bacteria are primarily transmitted through sexual contact and the shared use of personal hygiene items. Infection can also occur via transplacental transmission and during childbirth. Interestingly, Ureaplasma parvum can be found in the bodies of healthy women; however, inflammatory conditions, prolonged stress, or other illnesses can disrupt the bacterial flora, leading to the proliferation of this pathogenic bacterium. On the other hand, Ureaplasma urealyticum infection is often associated with concurrent HPV infections, increasing the number of health complications due to these pathogens.
Consequences of Infection:
- In women: These bacteria can cause inflammation of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or cervix.
- A serious complication of untreated Ureaplasma urealyticum infection in pregnant women is inflammation of the fetal membranes and placenta, which can lead to premature birth.
- In men: Untreated infection can result in fertility issues, prostatitis, epididymitis, or kidney inflammation.
When to Perform the Test?
- For individuals with the following symptoms: Pain during urination, burning in the urethra.
- For sexual partners of individuals diagnosed with the infection.
- For individuals being evaluated for infertility causes.
Important Note: The infection often presents without symptoms! Therefore, women planning to conceive and their partners, even if asymptomatic, are also among the target group for testing for the presence of these bacteria.
Biological Material Used for Testing:
- Women: Urethral swab and/or cervical swab, liquid-based cytology, urine.
- Men: Urethral swab and subpreputial swab, urine.
Waiting Time for Test Results: Up to 5 working days.
