Test for Mycoplasma – Mycoplasma hominis and Mycoplasma genitalium (Real-Time PCR)
Purpose of the Test:
- Detection of the DNA of Mycoplasma hominis and Mycoplasma genitalium in the tested material.
- Diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections, enabling the identification of potential co-infections and the selection of appropriate therapy.
The test detects the presence of two species of Mycoplasma: M. hominis and M. genitalium, allowing for the confirmation or exclusion of the presence of these bacteria in the tested material. The infection may be asymptomatic in both women and men, and the consequences of untreated infection can be serious.
When and Who Should Undergo Mycoplasma Testing?
- For individuals with symptoms of urogenital infections:
- In women: Painful urination, unusual discharge from the urethra, vaginal burning, unpleasant vaginal odor, discharge, pain during intercourse, spotting after intercourse, and between menstrual periods.
- In men: Painful urination, unusual discharge from the urethra, penile irritation.
- For sexual partners of individuals diagnosed with the infection.
- For individuals being evaluated for infertility causes.
Important Notes:
- The course of the infection can be asymptomatic or manifest with mild clinical symptoms.
- Consider testing in sexually active individuals with risk factors such as having multiple sexual partners or reduced immunity, for example, associated with HIV infection.
