Transforming growth factor beta TGF-beta
Clinical significance
Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) is an anti-inflammatory protein that controls the proliferation and róation of most typesóof cells. In many diseases, there are abnormalities of TGF-beta expression. This protein plays an important role in autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus. In a physiological state, TGF-ß is captured by fibrillin into connective tissue. In genetically determined Marfan syndrome, TGF-ß is not bound by fibrillin and remains as a free particle in the blood, leading to abnormal behavior of connective tissue cells.
