Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)—formerly known as venereal diseases—are a group of infectious diseases transmitted through sexual contact. Nearly half of all cases affect individuals aged 15 to 24.
Since many STDs present no symptoms or only mild symptoms, infected individuals may unknowingly spread the disease to others. Therefore, early detection and treatment through screening tests are essential. Regular STD screening is recommended as part of routine health check-ups for sexually active teenagers, young adults, and individuals at higher risk.
Untreated STDs can have significant and long-term health consequences, including infertility in both men and women. In women, they may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which increases the risk of infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
