The knee joint ultrasonography is a very precise ultrasound examination that allows for diagnosing degenerative disorders and changes taking place in the joint. The examination, during which a gel-covered transducer is applied to the patient’s joint and particular anatomical structures are scanned, is minimally invasive and painless. The examination is conducted with the patient lying on his or her back. The patient is lying on his or her stomach in case of a popliteal fossa examination. The knee ultrasonography allows for assessing the joint’s soft parts, such as ligaments, joint capsule, menisci and cartilages. The indications for the examination includes knee traumas and injuries, suspicion of haematoma, abscess or cyst, synovial membrane hypertrophy as well as joint disorders, including rheumatoid arthrosis. After the examination, the doctor develops an impression, attaches the image and gives it to the patient.
Contraindications for an ultrasonography examination
- a relative contraindication for performing an ultrasonography examination are open, unhealed wounds at the examined spot
