Test description

Zonulin is a protein secreted by enterocytes that belongs to the pre-haptoglobin group. Zonulin plays a key role in regulating the permeability of tight junctions between intestinal epithelial cells, which affects the integrity of the intestinal barrier.
The Zonulin blood test is used to assess the permeability of the intestinal barrier, and thus to diagnose and monitor diseases associated with disruption of this permeability, such as autoimmune diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases and other metabolic inflammatory conditions.

When to perform a blood zonulin test
Testing blood zonulin levels is recommended when intestinal barrier permeability disorders are suspected. Intestinal permeability can be altered as a result of various conditions, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, as well as in inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Increased levels of zonulin can indicate leaky gut, which in turn can lead to overactivation of the immune system and chronic inflammation. Therefore, this test is important for patients with suspected such disorders, especially when clinical symptoms may indicate leaky gut barrier.


Zonulin test in the blood - who should perform it
Blood zonulin testing should be considered by people who have symptoms or conditions associated with intestinal permeability disorders. These include patients with chronic autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis, as well as those with inflammatory bowel diseases. In addition, the test may be useful for people with suspected type 1 or type 2 diabetes, as an increase in zonulin levels may be associated with the pathogenesis of these conditions. It is also worthwhile for patients who have nonspecific symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, joint pain, digestive problems, or other symptoms that may suggest chronic inflammation, to have the test done.
