ANA 1 test

ANA antinuclear antibody test is a blood test that looks for certain types of antibodies to the body.

The ANA test is a blood test that looks for certain types of antibodies to the body

Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system to fight antigens, or microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria, entering the body. But an antinuclear antibody attacks the healthy cells of its body.

ANA antibodies are antibodies directed against components of the cell nucleus (antinuclear antibodies), including the genetic material in the form of double-stranded DNA or the proteins that maintain its structure. If antinuclear antibodies are detected, it may indicate, an autoimmune disorder. An autoimmune disease causes the body to mistakenly attack its own cells, tissues and/or organs. These disorders can cause serious health problems. Such autoantibodies can damage joints, skin, muscles and other parts of the body.

ANA profile is used in the diagnosis of:

  • drug-induced lupus (drug-induced lupus)
  • systemic lupus erythematosus (otherwise known as SLE, a chronic immune-mediated rheumatic disease)
  • polymyositis (a rheumatic disease involving simultaneous inflammation in multiple muscle groups),
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • arthritis
  • Sjögren's syndrome

When symptoms such as joint and/or muscle pain, stiffness or swelling, fatigue, recurrent or persistent fever, red rash on the cheeks and dorsum of the nose resembling the shape of a butterfly, hypersensitivity to light,  numbness and tingling in the hands or feet, and hair loss are present, your doctor may order an ANA test.

The doctor may also order an ANA test
