CA 15-3 is a marker of breast cancer. It is worth having a test to determine its concentration whenever symptoms appear that may indicate a recurrence of breast cancer.

CA 15-3 Marker – What is this test?

The CA 15-3 marker is a glycoprotein produced by the cells of the mammary gland. It may appear in excessive amounts when breast cancer cells begin to produce it. An elevated level of CA 15-3 is found in about 10% of women with breast cancer without metastasis and in about 70% of those with metastases.

The CA 15-3 antigen test in the blood is performed before the start of treatment and after completion of breast cancer therapy. It is used for monitoring hormone and chemotherapy, as well as assessing the effectiveness of treatment to detect any recurrence of the disease.

When should the CA 15-3 test be performed?

The CA 15-3 marker is useful for patients who have already undergone breast cancer therapy at stage II or III of the disease. Monitoring the antigen level is especially important in women who have been diagnosed with metastases, for example, to the liver or bones.

How to prepare for the CA 15-3 test?

For the CA 15-3 test, you should come on an empty stomach. For about 12 hours before the sample collection, avoid eating meals, taking multivitamins, or supplements containing vitamin B7. It is also recommended to avoid alcohol, smoking, and intense physical exertion.

Breast cancer marker – how is the test performed?

The CA 15-3 antigen is tested by drawing a blood sample. This is done in the morning hours. The sample collection takes only a few seconds and is generally painless, though some patients may feel slight discomfort.

CA 15-3 Marker – Test Result

The CA 15-3 result is available within 3 business days. It can be collected either at the facility or online – in the latter case, you need to obtain an access code from the reception of the chosen facility. For CA 15-3, the normal range is below 25 U/ml. Elevated levels of the marker may indicate not only a recurrence of breast cancer but also cancers in other locations, such as colorectal or lung cancers, as well as benign breast tumors or liver cirrhosis or inflammation. Therefore, the results should be consulted with a doctor.
