Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid gland (FNAB) is an examination involving the collection of a cytological material from 1 lesion.Next, the sample with the material undergoes histopathological examination where the collected tissues are assessed and this service requires additional payment (according to the price list applicable at the Damian Medical Centre or Medicover Medical Centre).
IMPORTANT - At Medicover Hospital, the cost of histopathological examination of one sample is included in the examination price.
FNAB is a targeted biopsy, i.e. performed by a physician under ultrasound guidance, which makes it possible to precisely determine the area from which the biological material should be collected. The procedure requires no local anaesthesia, because the material is collected by means of ultra-thin needles (with a smaller diameter than in the case of blood collection needles).
The examination may help to diagnose or exclude malignant lesions in the thyroid gland, identify certain types of thyroiditis (thyroid inflammation), and decide about further procedures in the event where the disease is confirmed (pharmacological therapy or necessary surgery).
No special preparation is required before the examination.
It is necessary to have a medical prescription (in a paper form) and the latest ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland (not older than 3 months).
If, upon examination, the physician finds more than 1 lesion which s/he thinks necessary to be tested, and the patient decides to have another lesion biopsied, the patient is obliged to pay for the biopsies and histopathological examinations of the other lesion(s) at the centre.
