CA 50 Marker – Test Description
CA 50 is a cancer marker for the pancreas, liver, lungs, cervix, body of the uterus, prostate, ovaries, or kidneys. Cancer markers are substances whose elevated concentration in the body can be caused by the development of cancer. They are auxiliary tools in diagnosing the disease, monitoring the effects of treatment, predicting cancer recurrence, or detecting metastasis.
The test is performed without a referral. It is necessary when there is suspicion of one of the cancers listed above.
Pancreatic and Colorectal Cancer Markers – When to Take the Test?
Pancreatic and intestinal markers should be tested when symptoms suggest cancer. The symptoms vary depending on the type of cancer. For example, in the case of pancreatic cancer, they may include upper abdominal pain, loss of appetite, rapid weight loss, or weakness.
Regarding the CA 50 test, the marker may be ordered by a doctor when there is suspicion of:
-
pancreatic and colorectal cancer;
-
liver, lung, cervix and body of the uterus, prostate, ovaries, kidneys, and breast cancer, as well as malignant melanoma and lymphoma – elevated levels of the CA 50 marker are observed in 50-70% of patients with these conditions;
-
colitis;
-
certain autoimmune diseases and cirrhosis of the liver.
How to Prepare for the Test for Pancreatic and Colorectal Cancer?
The test will provide reliable results only if it is performed on an empty stomach. No food should be consumed 10-12 hours before the test. A small amount of water can be drunk immediately before the sample is taken. Cancer markers for the liver or kidneys should not be tested during fasting, after alcohol consumption, smoking, intense physical exertion, or during menstruation.
How is the Marker for Pancreatic, Liver, and Colorectal Cancer Tested?
A sample is taken from blood serum. The test should be conducted in the morning, between 7 and 9 AM, to obtain the most accurate results.
Colorectal and Pancreatic Cancer Marker – Results
The CA 50 marker helps diagnose many diseases, particularly cancers. However, the results obtained during the test should be compared with the patient's symptoms and medical history. Additional tests may also be necessary to determine, for example, the pancreatic marker CA 19-9.
CA 50 Marker – Price
Depending on the location and the facility where the test is performed, its cost may range from 130 to 220 PLN.
