Chlorprotixene in urine qualitatively
Clinical significance
Chlorprotixene is a neuroleptic drug of the thioxanthene derivative group. Its antipsychotic action is based on blocking receptorsów associated with the transmission of information via dopamine, located downstream of the synapse (a synapse is the site of connection of nerve cells) in the móbrain, as well as blocking adrenaline-dependent alpha receptors and inhibiting the release of most hormonesów from the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. It causes an increase in the concentration of prolactin in the blood. Unlike other drug derivativesów of this group, it has a pronounced sedative effect, as it inhibits stimuli flowing to the reticular system of the móbrainstem and also has an antiemetic effect by inhibiting chemoreceptorsóin the spinal cord. Chlorprotixene is used in the treatment of endogenous and organic psychoses with states of motor agitation and aggressiveness, anxiety and insomnia in neuroses and psychosomatic disorders, alcoholic psychoses. Determination of chlorprotixen in urine is used to confirm drug overdose.
