- Test description
Dihydroxytestosterone (DHT) is the most important metabolite of testosterone, and exhibits greater biological activity than testosterone.
It is formed in a metabolic pathway occurring in target cells, under the influence of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. It is counted among the diagnostically important androgensw. Over the course of a day, about 10% of testosterone is transformed into DHT.
The resulting DHT is responsible for sebum secretion by sebaceous glands, which affects acne lesions. Dihydrotestosterone is also responsible for androgenetic alopecia, which is due to the body's specific hypersensitivity to this compound.
Excess DHT can ralso be associated with prostatic (prostate) hypertrophy and cancer. The indication for DHT determination is androgenetic alopecia in men and hirsutism in women.
